Agentic is the adjective. An AI agent is the thing. When people say agentic AI, they mean AI that can take a goal and work toward it in steps.
What makes AI agentic?
Three things, roughly. It plans the steps on its own. It uses tools, like reading a spreadsheet, searching the web or drafting an email in Gmail. And it keeps going until the job is done instead of stopping after one reply.
What does agentic AI look like in a small business?
My AI bookkeeper is a good example. I drop in a credit card statement, and it reads the company profile, the chart of accounts, the vendor list, the categorization rules and the expense history, codes every transaction it's 90% sure about and flags the rest for a person. Nobody prompts it for each line.
Do I need agentic AI?
You need the work done. Agentic is just the word for AI that can do work instead of only talking about it. Start with one task you do every week, write down how you do it and build it as an AI employee.
